BAS Agent Registration
About The Course/Requirements
In March 2010, the Tax Practitioners Board set out education requirements that impact your registration as a BAS Agent. For an individual to become registered as a BAS agent the two mandatory BAS agent education requirements are:
- awarded at least either a Certificate IV in Bookkeeping or a Certificate IV in Accounting from an RTO (or equivalent); and
- successfully completed a course in basic GST/BAS taxation principles that is approved by the Board (BAS Agent Skill Set).

BAS Agent Registration - Frequently Asked Questions
What if I already have a Cert IV?
Some Cert IV courses include the BAS Agent Skill Set Units. If you have already completed a Cert IV course, check whether it included the two units below. If not, you can elect to complete these seperately with AIFA.
FNSBKG404A Carry out BAS and IAS
FNSBKG405A Establish and maintain a payroll system
Note that this is an approved Course in Basic GST/BAS Taxation Principles as outlined by the Tax Practitioners Board.
Why have the TPB brought in these BAS Agent requirements now?
The TPB has been given a strong consumer protection function under the legislation they administer. Their goal is to ensure that tax agent and BAS Agent services provided to members of the public on a commercial (fee paying) basis are delivered in a professional and consistent manner. In the long run, the requirement will mean that less desirable and less qualified BAS Agents will leave the market leaving more clients for those who are serious about providing great service.
When should I get the new qualifications?
The simple answer is the sooner the better. It is better to start now and give yourself sufficient time to achieve your qualifications on a sensible schedule. Also, it is likely that clients and prospective clients will start to look for BAS agents with these requirements so by completing the requirements sooner, you can continue to take on new clients without any concerns. Contact us to discuss enrolment.
Note: If a BAS agent notified to become registered and does not meet the educational requirements they can apply to renew their registration in February 2012 using the transitional option. Under the transitional option, applicants do not need to meet educational requirements. Instead, they must demonstrate that they have been providing BAS services to a competent standard and for a reasonable period. If granted by the Board, they will receive another 12 months registration and then will need to renew using the standard option in 2013. It is only at this time that they will need to meet the education requirements.
Are there courses that meet all requirements?
Yes - AIFA have compiled a program that will help you to meet all of your requirements. AIFAs course is mapped to the FNS10 training package which in lay person terms simply means it's the most up to date course available for BAS Agent compliance.
What is the duration of this course?
Students typically complete this course within 6 weeks with an approximate time committment of 10 hours per week. Time to complete depends on prior knowledge and experience. If you do need to complete the full Certificate IV course, that takes 26 weeks to complete.
